november thanksgiving read alouds

One of my favorite things each month is switching out our book display and adding seasonal books. I’m hoping to start a new monthly “Let’s Read” blog series where I share my favorite picture books for each month. Let’s get started with November!

In November, I focus my seasonal read alouds on Thanksgiving books. We read books about pilgrims, Native Americans, and lots of fun TURKEY books!

  1. If You Were At…The First Thanksgiving by Anne Kamma

I mentioned this book in my Pilgrim Life blog post (which includes FREE resources), and it’s one of the first books I read when we are discussing the life of the pilgrims and the Native Americans at that time. It has a lot of interesting information on what life was like for pilgrim children.

2. Turk and Runt by Lisa Wheeler

Turk and Runt is a super-cute book about a family of turkeys living on a farm. Turk and Runt are brothers, with Turk being the shining star of the family. The family, with the exception of Runt, is clueless as to what happens to the turkeys on the farm, and Runt has to save the day!

3. Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey by Joy Cowley

I love this book so much, and it is definitely one of my faves! Miguel lives with his grandparents, and his father (who is a truck driver) sends him a turkey (Gracias) for Thanksgiving. Of course, Miguel falls in love with his pet turkey and new best friend! Lots of great Spanish and English mixed throughout this book.

4. Who Will Carve the Turkey this Thanksgiving? by Jerry Pallotta

This is a fun book that lends itself to some great writing activities. Students can come up with their own ideas that follow this if/then format.

5. The Rough Face Girl by Rafe Martin

The Rough Face Girl is an absolute MUST OWN book. This Algonquin Indian folktale is an adaptation of the Cinderalla story. My students absolutely love it and always talk about it for days after we read it.

6. Thanksgiving is Here! by Dianne Goode

Thanksgiving is Here! is a fun, light-hearted book about family and being together on Thanksgiving. Lots of great rhyming as well!

7. Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson

Primary students love Bear books, and this one is no exception. Bear’s friends come through, as usual, with many things to make Thanksgiving a special day.

8. The Great Turkey Race by Steve Metzger

Another fun book where turkeys are trying their best to save themselves from being cooked for Thanksgiving dinner. I like to read this one and Turk and Runt and have students compare the two.

9. How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton

A turkey is running loose in the school, and all the students are trying to catch him. This fun story has a happy ending for all!

10. Thanksgiving for Emily Ann by Teresa Johnston

Thanksgiving tends to make Emily Ann a little grumpy. Everyone is busy and basically cramping her style. In the end, she realizes the true meaning of the holiday and appreciates the time with her family.

I hope this has given you some ideas of fun November books to share with your students. What are some of your favorites? Share in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!

If you’re looking for some engaging Thanksgiving math activities, these are some of my faves!

NOVEMBER MATH CRAFTS

My students have always loved these November Math Crafts, and I love that I can give them a fun activity that can be easily differentiated to meet the needs of all students! Check out all those differentiation options! I recently added a Cornucopia Math Craft and Thanksgiving Pie Math Crafts. So many fun choices! You can read more about my monthly math crafts HERE.

November Math Puzzles

These November Math Puzzles are another great option for addition and subtraction review. They include 3 puzzles and tons of differentiation options. They’re also EDITABLE, so you can really do anything you want with them! The great thing about these math crafts and math puzzles is that students all have the same end product, but the math can be individualized.

All right! That’s it for now! I hope you have a fantastic November!
